1.1 The Six Steps — Program Overview

1

Step 1: Fresh, Home-Prepared Meals

The foundation of the program starts with what goes into your dog’s bowl. Fresh, whole foods are easier to digest and provide the clean nutrition your dog’s body needs. A kidney-supportive diet focuses on high-quality protein, low phosphorus, and nutrient dense whole foods — free from the processed ingredients that put extra strain on the body.

2

Step 2: Pure, Clean Drinking Water

Clean, filtered water is essential. Tap water can contain chemicals, heavy metals, and impurities that create extra work for your dog’s kidneys. Use carbon-filtered, reverse osmosis, or distilled water to reduce that burden. Distilled water also helps support the body’s natural flushing processes.

3

Step 3: Plant-Based Superfoods (Dog Greens®)

Dog Greens® provides a broad spectrum of plant-based vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients — all in a highly bioavailable form your dog’s body can actually absorb. Unlike synthetic supplements made from rocks, shells, or chemicals, these organic superfoods deliver nutrition the way nature intended.

4

Step 4: Gentle Herbal Support

Organic herbal formulas to enhance kidney function and support healthy elimination. These time-tested botanicals are handcrafted in a GMP facility right here in the USA, using only organic and wildcrafted herbs grown in North America and select European regions.

5

Step 5: Daily Movement

Gentle, consistent movement supports healthy circulation throughout the body. Start with short, slow walks and gradually build up as your dog’s endurance allows. The goal isn’t exhaustion — it’s keeping blood flowing to support every organ, including the kidneys. Even a little movement each day makes a difference.

6

Step 6: Hydrotherapy

Alternating warm and cool water on the kidney area is a gentle, age-old practice that encourages healthy circulation. It can be done easily at home with a hand sprayer in the tub, or with hot and cold gel packs as an alternative. This simple routine is a powerful complement to the other five steps.

1.2 Important Note: Hydration

Keeping your dog well hydrated is key to supporting quality of life. It can help reduce nausea and support a healthy appetite.

Even if your dog is drinking on his own, he may still benefit from additional fluid support. If you haven’t already discussed subcutaneous (Sub Q) fluid therapy with your veterinarian, it’s worth asking about. Sub Q fluids are different from IV (intravenous) fluids — they’re injected under the skin, usually on the back of the neck or shoulder blade area. Your veterinarian can show you how to do this safely at home.

You can find Sub Q supplies like bags of Lactate Ringer’s Solution, drip sets, and 18 gauge Thin Wall needles from Chewy.com with a prescription from your vet. Don’t be nervous about asking — this is a standard, widely-used practice in veterinary care.

1.3 Program Details & Schedule

The program is organized into 3-week cycles. Your schedule will change for the third week. On average, most dogs will require two or three 3-week cycles for best results, but every dog is different.

For maintenance, you may continue with home-prepared meals, Dog Greens®, filtered water, and regular exercise. Twice a year in the Spring and Fall, we recommend repeating the herbal maintenance cleansing cycle — one week for the kidneys followed by one week for the liver. This is an excellent routine for dogs of all ages.

Maintenance formula:

Pet Protect can be given twice daily on an ongoing basis between cleansing cycles. This formula helps support the healthy function of the kidneys, liver, heart, and brain. Excellent for dogs of all ages, especially seniors.

* If you are home during the day, you can administer a serving at lunch for a total of 4 per day.

* If you are using Hawthorne for natural, healthy blood pressure support, it may be given 3–4 times per day at the same time as the other formulas.

Phosphorus Binders:

If you have not done so already, discuss adding phosphorus binders to your dog’s meals with your veterinarian. The two most commonly prescribed are Aluminum Hydroxide (Phos-Bind) and Epakitin. They must be given with meals to bind to the phosphorus in the food being consumed.

1.4 Administration Instructions

Our tincture bottles include a glass dropper. For your dog’s safety, we’ve also included a plastic oral syringe to administer the liquid formulas.

How to Give the Drops

If your dog has a good appetite, you can mix the drops with a small snack-sized portion of food or add them to a meal.

If your dog isn’t willing to eat the drops in food, you can place them in the syringe and then draw up some plain unsweetened yogurt, baby food, or applesauce. This will help mask the taste. Yogurt usually works best.

You can give both formulae together at the same time.

Instructions by Weight

We’ve upgraded our droppers to include measurement markings (mL). This allows you to measure your dog’s herbal support with total precision without having to count every single drop.

You can measure by counting drops or by using the measurement lines on the glass dropper. Both methods provide approximately the same amount.

For Precision (Toy breeds / Tiny Dogs): Use 1 drop for every 1 pound of body weight.

For Convenience (Small / Medium / Large Dogs): Use the measurement lines on the dropper according to the chart below.

Best results are obtained when the drops are given a minimum of 3 times per day. 4 times per day is ideal if your schedule allows it.

Alternate Method: Capsules

If your dog is not cooperative with the oral syringe but will take pills, you can purchase empty capsules from your local natural food or vitamin store (also available on Amazon). Open the capsule, place drops inside, close the capsule, and administer. Work quickly as the drops will begin to soften the capsule after a few minutes.

1.5 Hydrotherapy — Kidney Area

Hydrotherapy is one of the most effective practices in any natural health program. By alternating warm and cool water on the kidney area, you encourage healthy circulation — bringing blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the area while supporting the body’s natural processes.

Before You Begin

If your dog has thick hair, you may need to trim the hair on the lower back, where the ribs meet the waist line. If your dog has a short or single coat, the water should be able to contact the skin without trimming. The kidneys are located where the ribs meet the waist, one on either side of the spine. If you’re not sure where they’re located, ask your veterinarian to show you.

1

Warm Water (1 minute)

Place your dog in the tub with a hand sprayer. Turn the water on warm and apply to the kidney area. Get your dog used to the water, then after about a minute, turn up the heat to the hottest setting you can handle without burning yourself or your dog. Keep this on the area for one full minute

2

Cold Water (1 minute)

Turn the hot water completely off and spray the cold water for another full minute.

3

Repeat Cycle (10–15 minutes)

Continue alternating between warm and cold for a total of 10–15 minutes. End on warm to relax, or cold to invigorate. You’ll notice your dog may yawn or even start to doze off on warm, and perk right up on cold.

4

Finish and Rest

Allow your dog to rest comfortably after the session.

Frequency: At least once per day, ideally twice. Can be repeated multiple times per day if your schedule allows.

Alternative: Gel Pack Method

If having your dog stand in the tub for 10–15 minutes is not an option, hot and cold gel packs are an excellent alternative. You can warm them in the microwave and cool them in the fridge or freezer (you’ll need two packs). Place the hot pack on for 1 minute, then switch to the cold pack for 1 minute. Repeat for 10–15 minutes.

CAUTION:

Introduce hydrotherapy to your dog slowly. Over the next 3–5 days, gradually increase the contrast in temperature with each session until you reach the temperatures described above. If your dog is having a health issue, consult with your veterinarian before starting Hydrotherapy.

*Consult your veterinarian before beginning new therapies.

1.6 Nausea & Appetite Support

Even if your dog is not vomiting, he may still be nauseous. Here are some excellent natural remedies to help settle the stomach and support appetite:

Apple Cider Vinegar

When the stomach becomes acidic, it can cause nausea and loss of appetite. Raw Apple Cider Vinegar is a wonderful natural antacid.

Give 1/4 teaspoon for dogs up to 20 lbs, 1/2 teaspoon for dogs up to 40 lbs, 3/4 teaspoon for dogs up to 60 lbs, and 1 teaspoon for dogs 80 lbs and over.

You can mix this with some unsweetened applesauce and syringe it into his mouth 3–4 times per day or as needed.

Ground Ginger

Powdered or ground ginger root is an excellent herb for settling the stomach. Capsules are available at most pharmacies or health food stores. For larger dogs, give 1–2 capsules 3–4 times per day. For smaller dogs, mix a pinch of ginger powder with some unsweetened applesauce.

A helpful tip: Give ginger with the Apple Cider Vinegar mixture 20–30 minutes before offering a meal. This is usually very helpful for appetite.

1.7 Kidney Diet & Recipes

Diet is your number one priority in supporting healthy kidney function. Focus on high quality protein, low phosphorus, highly nutritious whole foods — free from processed ingredients and synthetic vitamins and minerals.

CAUTION:

We do NOT recommend any commercially prepared processed food — even if it’s a prescription brand. These foods are processed, refined, and generally made from poor quality ingredients. Your dog’s body needs fresh, whole foods to thrive.

If your dog has an appetite and is eating on his own, this is the best recipe. Portions are for a dog of approximately 40 pounds — adjust up or down based on your dog’s weight.
See Chart further down.

Preparation:

Equal parts raw meat (Chicken, Turkey, Beef, or Lamb) to equal parts raw pureed fruits and vegetables. That’s a 50/50 mix by volume (1 cup meat to 1 cup veggies, or one pint to one pint).

Do NOT feed Onion, Grapes, or Raisins. Dogs can have any other fruits and veggies you wish. Parsley, Watermelon, Cucumber, and Celery are all excellent kidney foods.

  • 1 teaspoon Seaweed Calcium to each lb of food for calcium needs
  • Dog Greens®: add 1/2 tsp per 10 lbs of body weight, 2x daily (included in the Kidney Health package)

Daily Food Amount by Weight (For 100% Raw Diet only)

Your dog’s daily food requirement should be approximately 2.5% of their body weight (measured by weight in ounces, not volume).

WARNING:

Onions, Grapes, and Raisins should not be fed to any dog as they are toxic to canines.

Custom Recipe Guidelines

If you prefer to put a recipe together yourself: raw meat can make up to 50% of the meal by volume. If using cooked meat, keep it to no more than 25% by volume. The remaining 75% should be vegetables and starches like sweet potatoes, white potatoes, white rice, pearled barley, or white pasta. Always include Seaweed Calcium and Dog Greens®.
